Recounting Two Key Hands & Monster Pots

I don’t know. I’m getting kind of tired of writing about lost golden opportunities for big bucks in big online poker games tournaments. There have been so many over the past several years. When I recount them, I have to relive those key hands that brought the house a-tumbling and that’s always painful, regardless of how long it’s been. But, I guess, in a sense, it’s therapeutic, and more importantly, the process causes me to think in detail about exactly what happened that led to the latest disaster. Any top pro will tell you this type of post-mortem analysis is key to improving his game and avoiding similar mistakes in the future. So here we go – again.

But first, I’ll describe a tough, although ultimately bad call I made early on, which put me in great chip shape. Doug Dalton, Jack McClelland, and their staff are seasoned experts at running big-time poker tournaments, as evidenced by the fact that back in 2006 a then remarkable 606 players ponied-up $25,000 each to enter the WPT Championship at the Bellagio. First place paid over $3.7 million, and with 50,000 in starting chips, along with 90 minute rounds, this was a tournament that suited my game and my goals. I wanted to take this one down.

My pre-tournament strategy was to survive Day One and build chips in Day Two. In short, I was going to give up small edge/high risk opportunities in favor of chipping away when I clearly had the best of it. I was determined to play a controlled, relatively lower-variance game early on.

I normally try not to have any distractions on game day, but the morning of the main event was a bit unusual. I received a series of calls I had to take. Each of them was important and required some follow-up. By the time I arrived at the Bellagio, I knew that my focus and preparation were lacking. But as a pro, I had to suck it up and perform anyway or else I’d join the NFL. This acronym does not stand for National Football League. No. It stands for Not For Long.

At my starting table was easily the wildest man in the tournament. His name is Robert Alexander. Alexander is rumored to have owned the company that developed the wildly successful and even more controversial video game, Grand Theft Auto. Alexander is not really a poker player, but he loves to gamble, and I mean gamble big. I know this because Alexander and I played at the Bellagio together a few times. We are talking about a guy who can win or lose several million dollars in one session. Not just in poker.

How do you play Texas hold’em

The aim of the game of texas holdem

In Texas hold ‘em poker you want to make the best five-card hand, with seven cards available to use. At the beginning of the game, you will be dealt two cards, which you’ll keep to yourself. The remaining five cards are community cards which are dealt face-up in the middle to be used by every player to make hands.

Betting after the cards have been dealt

After the players hole cards have been dealt, you have the chance to call, bet or fold, depending on how good a hand you have, or how scary you think the board is to your opponenet. The action starts with the player to the immediate left of the big blind, also called under the gun.

After the deal you have to at least call this bet to stay in the hand or you can fold if you don’t want to invest anymore of your chips in the pot. Checking is not an option here since the players who posted the blinds have effectively started the betting with hes big blind.

The action always moves around the table in clockwise direction till each player has folded, called or raised. If nobody has raised by the time the betting gets to the big blind, the big blind can check their own blind or raise the pot even more.

In limit games when you play online poker betting is limited to three raise, also called betting is capped once three raises have been made at the table. In no-limit Texas hold ‘em betting continues until all players have either called the maximum bet or gone all-in putting all theis chips in the pot.. If bets continue to go up after a player is all-in, a side pot is created to cover that bet.

The flop comes

Now that the first round of betting is over, it’s time to see the flop.

The flop is three cards that are shared, dealt face-up in the middle of the table also valled the board. Each player now uses these community cards to build their hand.

Then it is time for another round of betting. The betting now starts with the player to the left of the dealer, regardless of whether the dealer is still active in the hand or not. The player to the left of the dealer will keep the initial action for the rest of the hand. Other than that, betting is the same as it was before the flop.

The turn card comes

This is the forth card and s used by all players remaining to construct their hands and is followed by a round of betting exactly like on the flop.

The river card

Four cards have been dealt, and one to go. Now it is time for the fifth and last community card to be dealt, the river. Now that all the cards have been dealt, each player remaining in the hand can see what their best five-card hand is.

This is also the final round of betting.

The showdown, time to find the winner

Its now time for showdown and to see who wins the pot. Each player who is still in the hand now have to show their cards, starting with the last person to bet, and then moving round the table clockwise. Players who know they have been beaten have the option of mucking their hand, throwing their cards away without having to show. But the last player to bet (and first to show) always has to show hes cards.

Seeing what cards other players have, even if they lose, is important in developing a good strategy so it is always a good idea to take note when you have the chance.
